Antimicrobial Resistance in Nepal: A Silent Public Health Crisis

Introduction

Imagine a world where antibiotics stop working. A small wound could become life-threatening, and routine surgeries could turn deadly. This is the reality we face with Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

Why AMR Matters

In Nepal, over-prescription, unregulated drug sales, and lack of awareness are accelerating AMR. Left unchecked, we risk reversing decades of medical progress.

My Work on the COSTAR Project

At HERD International, I contributed to capacity-building workshops where we:

  • Trained health professionals on rational antibiotic use.
  • Educated communities about the risks of self-medication.
  • Integrated AMR tracking into national health monitoring systems.

What Nepal Needs Now

  • Policy enforcement on prescription regulations.
  • National-level awareness campaigns.
  • Investment in research and surveillance systems.

Closing Thoughts

Fighting AMR requires multi-sector collaboration. Our health, agriculture, and pharmaceutical sectors must work together before it’s too late.
